Kitesurfers who visit Aruba are or become adicted to both the sport and Aruba.  Kitesurfing, also known as Kiteboarding, involves using a power kite to pull a rider through the water on a small surfboard or a Kiteboard (a wakeboard-like board). A Kitesurfer or Kiteboarder uses a board with foot-straps or bindings, combined with the power of a large controllable kite to propel himself and the board across the water.  The sport is still in its infancy, but is rapidly growing in popularity. In 2006, the number of Kitesurfers has been estimated at around 150,000 to 200,000. The sport is becoming safer due to innovations in kite design, safety release systems, and instruction[citation needed]. Many riding styles have evolved to suit different types of riders and conditions, such as wake style, wave riding, freestyle, jumping, and cruising.  If you have never done this before, you will need a good school and instructor.  Aruba has some excellent qualified instructors. One of them is Armando, who is IKO and VDWS validated. He introduced Kitesurfing in Aruba and his school succesfully instructed over 4000 people.  Let’s take a look at his program. Introduction to Kitesurfing 2.5 hour course - includes gear instructions and chase boat Advanced Kitesurfing 4 lesson course - includes gear instructions and chase boat. Day 1 The first day you will learn the basics and fly a 2 Meter Foil Kite. You will learn more about the power zone and how the kite works in the edge of the wind window. Followed by a taste of the water with a larger inflated kite, safety system process and self rescue performance. Finally you will go for your First Body Dragging Experience, which will get you hooked right away! The first lesson is a 2.5 hour including gear. Day 2 Is time to try a board – you will learn the basics of how to put the board on. Then we’ll give you a chance to try this mind blowing experience. There will be an instructor with you in a chase boat telling you what to do, if you have the talent, Wangle It Up.  Day 3 Today, we will work on your stance to better teach you how to be more efficient with your kite and to make the edging a little easier. We’ll also work on some drills to make going upwind a bit easier. We also offer advanced classes for: Board of Tricks, Handle Passes, Kite Loops, Transitions and much more. Off coast retrieval for experienced riders is also available. Offshore winds make optimal riding conditions but making it back to shore can be rough.
